Bringing Our Authentic Selves to Class

I, as an instructor, have to bring humor into my class. It’s who I am. It’s my personality.
I know another teacher who is soft but can also be ferocious when she needs to be. And trust me. It’s something to see. Wow.
She’s an amazing instructor. But where I bring humor, she brings sweetness. When she’s teaching, she’s loving and open and holds the container for you in this beautiful way.
As soft as she is, she’s loud compared to others, particularly one instructor who’s even softer and uses few words.
But they’re equally effective.
The “special sauce” of what we’re trying to give over is that instructors need to create their own path to bringing their own personalities into this work.

There is no need to fit into a model of what you think a self-defense teacher should be.
As an instructor, bringing your authentic self is what’s going to help other people connect with their authentic selves.
That’s the most important thing.
