Do Students Need to Master a Curriculum?

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

Yesterday, I talked about teaching a class right after a terrorist attack, and how I had to abandon my original plan.

Which brought up the question of, “Do students need to leave a course having mastered a set curriculum?”

I don’t know. Maybe.

Nobody has ever really been able to convince me of this.

I don’t mind giving students access to a bunch of materials and letting them figure things out.

And there are best practices. Yes, class should begin with a warm-up. But are any two instructors going to do the exact same warm-up?

Absolutely not.

That’s okay. There’s structure. But there’s no micromanaging of every minute.

The idea is for students to connect with their own inner power. Not the inner power of the instructor.

The idea is for students to connect with their own inner power. Not the inner power of the instructor.

I believe that’s one of the “special sauces” of how we teach teachers to run an Empowerment Self Defense class.
